Page Banner elements explained (Page Manager)

All element types share some of the same basic controls. For instance, any element can be added to a banner but hidden from members of a specified group or role. Use the checkbox at the bottom of the elements' settings to set which roles/groups cannot view this element. To add elements to a banner navigate to the top navigation bar and select Site Manager > Design > Page Banners. Once you have selected the banner you would like to add the element to, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see an "Add element to this banner" selector.

Pick the element you would like to add from the dropdown menu, and then click "Insert Element." 

There are a number of different types of banner elements available. Like Portal elements, banner elements are tailored for a specific purpose. Below is a list of available banner elements, and what they all do. 

Note that some banner elements can only be used in a particular kind of element (side/top/bottom). Others will only appear on pages of a certain page type. This is noted in the descriptions below whenever applicable.

  • Regular text box – Used to add a block of text, or images, or anything else accessible through the Popup Editor) to a banner. This text can be seen by all users at any time.

  • Logged out text box – Used to add a text block that is only visible while users are not logged in. Once a user logs in, this box disappears.

  • DHTML navigation – This element is added to top banners to create the main navigation menu, featuring dropdown menus that reveal sub-pages

  • Navigation – The standard “Nav” element is vertically-oriented and thus used in side banners. It does not include dropdown features, and simply lists pages and sub-pages. The “Nav Start Level” and “Nav End Level” controls determine which pages will be included in the banner element.

  • Page field – Incorporates a section of the current page (Page Content 1, Page Content 2, Notes, Page Name or a Thumbnail Image) into the banner.

  • Athletics Team - displays only on Athletics Team Directory pages when a specific team is selected. The content for each team is drawn from the team's info in the Athletics Manager module > Teams tab > Team Properties screen > “Banner Content” section.

  • Athletics Events – displays only on Athletics pages. Displays upcoming Athletic events. Can be configured to show only events from specific teams.

  • Calendar Plugin – The Calendar banner element displays events from one or more specific calendars. Events can be opened for a more detailed view; admins can select which site page details open in.

  • Calendar Options – This customization element only appears on Calendar pages, and even then only if that calendar page has the “Customization” option activated. It adds a calendar to the banner, including a grid view, search field, RSS and iCal feed buttons, and radio buttons to select between upcoming and past calendar events.

  • News – The News element will pull in recent content posted to the News Manager module. Options allow configuration of the number of stories displayed, the content shown, which News Categories are represented, and where additional details will be opened when a story is clicked.

  • News Slideshow – Functions just like the News element above, except that only one story is displayed at a time. Can be configured to cycle through stories automatically, or whenever a user clicks the element.

  • Blog – The Blog element is displayed only on Blog pages. It allows direct access to recent blog posts, as well as either blog categories or archived posts.

  • Directory Site Nav – The Directory Site Navigation element only appears on teacher pages*; in operation it functions exactly like a standard Site Navigation element.

  • Directory Profile – The Directory Profile element only appears on teacher pages*; it displays a link to the teacher's profile, an email link, the teacher's room (if applicable), and a link to that teacher's media channel.

  • Form pull – This element allows admins to embed a form into a banner. Note that any banner-embedded forms should be configured to display correctly in the narrow horizontal margins of a form using the controls in Forms Manager!

  • Media – Use the Media banner element to embed a video, audio file or photo slideshow into a banner.

  • Portal – The Portal banner element displays shortcut links to all of the Portal pages that have been created in Page Manager. If the user is not logged in, the element will display a username/password login box.

  • Social – The Social element adds quick links to users' Activity Stream, Profile and Messages.

  • Shopping Cart – The Shopping Cart element only appears when a user has added at least one item to their shopping cart from Commerce page. It will show links allowing the user to edit the items in their shopping cart, or proceed to checkout.

  • Shopping cart empty – This banner element will only be displayed when a user's shopping cart is empty, and can be configured to display a message to the user.

  • Search – Adds a Search field to the banner, allowing users to find a specific string of text on site pages.

  • Translation – The Translation shows a link to a new page, which has the same content as the current page, only in a different language. The links between pages are configured in the “advanced settings > Translated Pages” section of the page properties in Page Manager.

  • Bar graph – Use the Bar Graph element to add a bar graph to a banner. The bar graph's size, appearance and color can all be customized; it can also be set to be a static image, or to animate over a set period of time.

  • Custom – This element is used to add any customized banner elements that finalsite has created for your site.

*Teacher pages have been phased out and can no longer be created, but these elements will work for teacher pages that already exist.
