Chat for families: Moderate and report messages

This article covers the security, privacy, and moderation responsibilities in Finalsite Chat, including how to report inappropriate communication and how the platform's content moderation system protects chat rooms and direct messages.

💡Quick answers

  • What is a Chat Manager's role in moderation? Chat Managers can report messages, temporarily block users, and mute participants within the rooms they manage. Permanent blocks and broader moderation actions are reserved for District and School Admins.
  • How is an inappropriate message reported? Long-press the message, tap Report, and select a reason. District and school administrators are notified immediately and can take action.
  • Does profanity get automatically blocked? Yes. Messages containing profanity are blocked before sending, and the sender is notified of the violation. No Chat Manager action is required.
  • Can health or medical information be shared in Chat? No. Finalsite Chat is not HIPAA-compliant. Direct families to use a HIPAA-compliant platform or secure email for medical documents.
  • Are deleted messages truly gone? No. Finalsite retains an archive of all communications, including edited and deleted messages. District and school administrators can request these records from Finalsite support for compliance or safety purposes.
  • What can Chat Managers do that participants cannot? Chat Managers can temporarily block users, mute participants, and report messages. They cannot permanently block users or access the moderation dashboard — those capabilities belong to District and School Admins. See the roles and permissions table for the full breakdown.

How content moderation works

Our moderation system includes proactive measures to ensure appropriate interactions:

  • Active Monitoring: Continuous oversight by district and school administrators.
  • Flagging and Blocking: We utilize filters and blocklists to manage different types of content in the form of text, images, and videos.
    • Flagging for Review: Text, images, and videos flagged by our AI model for toxicity, threats, or inappropriate language are reviewed by administrators.
    • Immediate Blocking: Messages containing profanity are blocked before sending, with the sender notified of the violation.

Which content is flagged and/or blocked

Content subject to review or immediate blocking includes:

  • Spam and promotions: Repetitive or promotional content not aligned with educational objectives.
  • Personal information: Attempts to direct conversations away from the platform by sharing sensitive information.
  • Toxicity and threats: Messages containing threats, insults, or attacks based on identity or protected characteristics.
  • Obscenity and explicit content: Including sexually explicit material or vulgar language.

What and who can get blocked

Finalsite Chat employs extensive measures to maintain appropriateness:

  • Blocked words: A comprehensive list of 10,000 prohibited words managed by AI to prevent their use.
  • Blocked users: Users engaging in inappropriate behavior repeatedly will be temporarily blocked or permanently restricted from using the platform.
