This article covers common calendar element display and performance issues in Finalsite Composer, including how to identify timezone mismatches, adjust date filters, and reset the element configuration.
💡Quick answers
- What causes a calendar element to not display or load slowly? Possible causes include a timezone mismatch between the element and the school's timezone, overly broad date filters loading too many events at once, or a misconfigured element.
- How is a timezone mismatch identified? Compare the timezone set on the calendar element with the school's timezone in Composer settings. A mismatch can cause events to appear at the wrong time or not appear at all.
- Why do date filters affect page performance? Broad date ranges cause the calendar to load a large number of events at once, which can significantly slow the page. Narrowing the range reduces the number of events fetched.
- What does removing and re-adding the element do? It resets the element's configuration to defaults, which can clear settings that have become misconfigured.
- When should Finalsite Support be contacted? If none of the troubleshooting steps resolve the issue, contact Support for further investigation.

What causes this issue
Calendar element issues typically fall into one of three categories. No error message appears; the symptom is a calendar that is missing, displaying events at the wrong time, or causing a slow page load.
- Timezone mismatch. If the calendar element's timezone does not match the school's timezone, events may display at the wrong time or fail to appear entirely.
- Overly broad date filters. A wide date range causes the element to load a large number of events on page load, which can significantly slow performance.
- Misconfigured element settings. Filters or settings that were incorrectly applied can cause the calendar to display incorrectly or not render at all.
Troubleshoot the calendar element
Check the timezone setting
Open the Calendar element settings in Composer and compare the timezone to the school's timezone. If they do not match, update the element's timezone to align with the school's setting and save the change.
If events are appearing at the wrong time rather than not appearing at all, also check the Default Time Range setting in Calendar Manager. The article Display published timed events in calendar view covers how this setting controls which timed events are visible.
Tighten date filters
In the Calendar element settings, review the date range filter. Narrow the start and end dates to limit the number of events loaded on the page. A smaller event set reduces the data fetched and improves load time.
If visitors need to browse or search beyond a narrow date range, consider adding a Calendar Tools element to the page. It provides keyword search and date range controls without requiring a wide default filter on the Calendar element itself.
Remove and re-add the element
If the timezone and filters appear correct but the issue persists, remove the Calendar element from the page and re-add it. This resets the element's configuration to defaults and can clear settings that have become misconfigured. See Understanding elements for steps on deleting and adding elements in Composer. Reconfigure the element's settings after re-adding it.
