Message won't schedule or send: How to troubleshoot

This article covers scheduling and sending failures in Messages and Messages XR, including how to identify missing required fields, confirm send permissions, and resolve timezone-related blocks.

💡 Quick answers

  • Why is the schedule button inactive? One or more required fields are likely missing: subject line, recipient group, or scheduled send time. All three must be filled in before the schedule button becomes active.
  • What permissions are needed to send a message? The account must have Send permission assigned for the specific message type. Review Messages permissions or Messages XR permissions.
  • Can a scheduled time set in the past block sending? Yes. If the scheduled time has already passed in the account's configured timezone, scheduling will be blocked even if the time appears valid in the browser's local timezone.
  • What if the message is stuck in draft with no error message? Save the message as a draft, refresh the browser, and reopen the message before attempting to schedule again.

What causes this issue

When a message cannot be scheduled or sent in Messages or Messages XR and no error appears, the cause is typically one of the following:

  • Missing required field. The subject line, recipient group, or scheduled send time is incomplete.
  • Insufficient permissions. The account does not have Send permission for the message type being used.
  • Timezone mismatch. The scheduled time is in the past relative to the account's configured timezone, even if it appears valid in the browser's local timezone.

Troubleshoot a message that won't schedule or send

Confirm required fields are complete

Open the message and verify that all three required fields are filled in:

  • Subject line. Must not be blank.
  • Recipient group. At least one recipient or group must be selected.
  • Scheduled send time. A date and time must be set if scheduling for later delivery.

If any of these are missing, complete them and check whether the schedule button becomes active. See Send messages from Messages and Messages XR for a full walkthrough of the send process.

Verify send permissions for the account

Confirm that the account has Send permission assigned for the message type being used. Permissions are managed separately for Messages and Messages XR:

If the account lacks the required permission, a district or site administrator will need to update the role settings before the message can be sent.

Check the scheduled time against the account timezone

Ensure the scheduled send time is in the future relative to the account's configured timezone. A time that appears valid in the browser's local timezone may already be in the past in the account timezone, which will block scheduling with no visible error.

Set the scheduled time to a point clearly in the future, save, and attempt to schedule again. If the account's timezone setting needs to be reviewed, contact a district administrator.

Save as draft, refresh, and reopen

If the schedule button remains inactive after completing the steps above, try the following sequence:

  • Save the message as a draft.
  • Fully refresh the browser (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows; Command+Shift+R on Mac).
  • Reopen the draft and attempt to schedule or send again.

This clears any stale session state that may be preventing the schedule button from activating. If the message has already been scheduled and needs to be modified, see Troubleshoot: Edit message after scheduling send.

Contact Finalsite Support

If the message still cannot be scheduled or sent after completing all steps above, contact Finalsite Support. Include the following in the ticket:

  • Message name. The name or subject line of the affected message.
  • Message type. Whether the message is in Messages or Messages XR.
  • Description of the issue. What happens when trying to send or schedule, for example, whether the schedule button is inactive, the message stays in draft, or the action completes with no result.
