This article outlines best practices for adjusting pages on a Finalsite site based on CrazyEgg reports, including where to place key content and how to clarify links and labels.
💡 Quick answers
- What is the first step? Start with one question, such as whether families can find the inquiry button.
- How many changes at a time? One. A single change makes the next report easy to read.
- What if the change does not help? Compare the reports, then try a different position or label.
- Are mobile pages different? Often. Filter reports by device before drawing conclusions.

Move important content to high-attention areas
Reserve the top of the page for the most important goals. Nielsen Norman Group recommends keeping major calls to action above the fold and using consistent styling, such as clear headings, to draw attention to important content. If a key link sits in a blue area of the scrollmap, move it higher.Â
Turn expected clicks into links
If the heatmap shows clicks on a headline, image, or sentence that is not a link, link it to the page visitors expected.
Clarify labels and calls to action
If a button or quick link gets few clicks, try wording that matches what families search for, such as "Schedule a tour" instead of "Learn more." Keep link text descriptive so each link makes sense on its own.
Reduce competing options
If clicks scatter across many similar links, visitors may be unsure where to go. Fewer, clearer choices near the main call to action make the next step easier to find.
Check mobile separately
Desktop and mobile visitors often behave differently. Review each device on its own with filters before deciding that a page works.Â
Change one thing at a time
After a change, create a new heatmap for the page and compare it with the earlier one. See Comparing heatmap reports. For more ideas, browse the CrazyEgg blog and case studies.
| Finding | Adjustment to try |
|---|---|
| Key button in a blue scrollmap area | Move it higher or into a warm section. |
| Clicks on text that is not a link | Link the text to the matching page. |
| Quick link with few clicks | Relabel it with the words families use. |
| Clicks scattered across similar links | Reduce the number of options near the main call to action. |
| Different results on mobile | Adjust the mobile layout, then check it on its own. |
 Real-world scenarios
- Admissions inquiry button sits below the fold. Moving it above the average fold puts it where most visitors already look. A new heatmap a few weeks later shows whether clicks increased.
