Session Timeout Length

This article explains browser session timeout behavior for admin and portal users, including the fixed four-hour inactivity limit and why the length cannot be customized per role or user.

💡Quick answers

  • How long is the session timeout for admin and portal users? Both admin and portal user sessions automatically log out after four hours of inactivity following password entry.
  • Why isn't the session timeout longer or shorter? Four hours balances convenience, so users aren't logged out during normal task switching, with security, so an unattended computer doesn't stay logged in indefinitely.
  • Can I change the session timeout for a specific role or user? No; the session timeout length cannot be adjusted on a per-role or per-user basis.
  • Does closing a browser tab log me out immediately? Not necessarily; depending on the browser's settings, you may remain logged in if you reopen the tab or return to the site in a new tab before the timeout expires.

Browser sessions for both admin and portal users persist for four hours.

In other words: all site users, admin or otherwise, will be automatically logged out after 4 hours of inactivity after entering their password. Users can always end their session early by clicking the 'logout' icon.

If a user closes their browser tab without logging out of the site, then (depending on their browser's settings) they may stay logged into the site if they reopen that tab and/or navigate back to the site in a new tab. The automatic timeout is set to 4 hours so that users do not have to log back into the site every time they step away from their computer or switch tasks, but also so that a computer left unattended does not remain logged into the site indefinitely.

The session timeout length cannot be changed on a per-role or per-user basis.
