Create and manage page banners in Composer

Page banners frame the main content of a Composer page with headers, footers, and left or right sidebars, each of which can hold its own elements. This article covers creating a banner, populating it with elements, applying it to pages, publishing, and troubleshooting why a banner isn't displaying.

đź’ˇQuick answers

  • Where is the Banners section in Composer? In the Composer left navigation, between Pages and Elements.
  • Creating a new banner? Click the green + button next to Headers, Left Banners, Right Banners, or Footers in the Banners section, OR click the green + buttons in the Page Layout and Appearance menu.
  • Applying a banner to a page? Enter Compose mode on the page, click the Page Layout and Appearance icon in the bottom bar, and select the banner from the appropriate dropdown.
  • Why isn't my banner appearing on the page? Most often, the banner is unpublished. Banners must be published either in the Banners module (bottom-right Publish button) or via the Publish button at the top of the banner on a page. Also check that the banner has elements added and that filtered content (news, resources) isn't empty.
  • Banner showing for logged-in admins but not for public visitors? Check Access Control on the banner or its elements. The banner or specific elements may be restricted to admin-only or specific groups, hiding them from the general public.

Step 1: Create a new banner

There are two ways to create a new banner.

  1. In the Banners section of Composer, click on the green + button next to the type of banner you want to create (Headers, Left Banners, Right Banners, or Footers).

Step 2: Add elements to your banner

After giving your banner a name and saving your changes, the new banner will appear in the page's Composer view. Banners can be populated with elements by selecting them from the element library, just as you would on a regular page.

The appearance of banners can change based on the theme applied to the page. When editing a banner on a page, the banner will take the page's theme properties. It may look different when applied to a page with a different layout. When banners are edited in the Banners section, the elements have no styling at all.

Step 3: Apply banners to Composer pages

Apply banners individually to a page by entering Compose mode and clicking the Page Layout and Appearance icon on the bottom bar.

In the Page Layout and Appearance popup, define which banners will appear on the page.

Step 4: Publish your banner

When you're finished editing, publish your banner.

  • In the Banners section, click the Publish button in the bottom-right corner.

⚠️ Important Note

When displayed on a page, even in Compose mode, the published version of a banner will be shown. To view unpublished banner changes, click into the banner to enter editing mode.

Where do I edit my banner?

Header and Footer Banners Left and Right Banners

Option #1: Districts edit Header and Footer in the Locations module

Districts that utilize the Locations module will edit and update details in Header and Footer using the following steps:

  • Navigate to the Locations module.
  • Click on the School Location whose information in the Header and/or Footer you would like to make edits to.
  • Edit the details within a Location. Some examples are:
    • Title, School Name, Motto, Subtitle, Phone Number, Logo (whether Primary or Secondary).
  • Click Update to save changes.

Option #2: Individual schools edit header and footer directly in the Banners section in Composer navigation

  • Styling is turned off in the Banners tab which makes it easier to select the element you are wanting to edit.
  • Because content is pulled dynamically, each school should have its own Banner—this lets them manage their information directly in one place.
  • Not sure where a banner is showing up? You’ll see how many pages it’s applied to—even before hitting publish.
  • Previewing the banner before publish is only possible when added to a page.

⚠️ Important Note

When banners aren't displaying as you think they should, it is often because the banner hasn't been published, either in the bottom right corner in the Banners module OR the top right corner in Composer.

Set banner permissions

Banner permissions are set in two places:

  1. Composer Admin permissions. Adjust the levels on the banner column in the Global Messages admin permissions screen.

  2. Individual Banner level permissions. Grant permission at the banner level by selecting a specific banner to open in the banners panel, then click on the settings gear in the bottom right corner.
