What are Elements?
Elements are the fundamental building blocks of your Composer pages. Learn more about how elements work in the article, "Understanding elements" and read about each of the 5 tabs in the element library: Standard, Module, Layout, Social, and Shared.
The Navigation element dynamically generates the list of links that allow your visitors to find their way around the site. Additionally, it offers a Breadcrumbs option to let users know where they are within your site.
Site navigation is based on the page hierarchy of the site, as shown on the Pages tab of the Composer left navigation. Unless a page is marked in Page Settings as hidden from navigation, all pages on a given level will be pulled into the Navigation element.
For more information about using a Navigation element, refer to Set up a navigation element.
Element Settings
In addition to the common element settings, the Navigation element includes the following configuration options.
List
The Navigation List element format is the foundation of all a site’s navigation, frequently styled with CSS to integrate with your site’s design.
General Settings
-
Starts [X] Levels…: This setting determines the highest-level page(s) that will be displayed in the Navigation List. Level 0 is set as one of the four below options, and you can go up or down up to five levels in the site hierarchy.
-
Below Current Branch: A branch is a sub-section of the site, usually designated by a small gray icon to the left of the branch name. If the page the element is on is part of the main branch, the “Home” page will be considered level 0.
-
Below Selected Page: This option allows you to choose any page on the site to serve as level 0. The navigation will remain static no matter what page the element is displayed on.
-
Above Current Page: The page that the Navigation List element is on will be assigned level 0, and the element will start displaying pages the specified number of levels above that page.
-
Below Current Page: The page that the Navigation List element is on will be assigned level 0, and the element will start displaying pages the specified number of levels below that page.
-
-
Ends [X] Levels below…: This option sets how far below either the Current Page or Starting Level the Navigation List will show pages.
-
Page Description: This option will display the page description, which is located in the Page Settings for each page, under Nav Info.
-
Page Thumbnail: This option will display the page thumbnail, which is located in the Page Settings for each page, under Nav Info.
-
Display Inaccessible Pages to Unauthenticated Users: If a page has Access Control set, this setting ensures that those pages are hidden from users who are not logged in.
-
Display Inaccessible Pages to Authenticated Users: If a page has Access Control set, this setting will only display those pages that are available to them based on their role or groups.
Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs are a type of navigation that shows a page’s path through the levels of the site. All of a page’s “parent” pages will be displayed in a Navigation Breadcrumbs element.
General Settings
-
Breadcrumb separator: Choose from a pointed bracket (>), a slash (/), or a space to go between levels in the navigation.
Troubleshooting: Breadcrumbs not showing correctly?
